Towards writing

"At twenty-one, I am still very young, but I was always early. My literary activity began in a strange way for a poet - I started as a literary historian at the age of fifteen.

I study philosophy, which I do with great love and application. I do not know yet if this is where my future lies; in any case I should not expect to earn any money quickly. But I do not see any future in literature either. Journalism as is practiced in Vienna is everything I hate, men of letters are not very friendly, even if I get on very well with most of them... "

Letter to Karl Emil Franzos, who published poems in his Berlin magazine Deutsche Dichtung, dated January 10, 1901.
